The palmar interossei are three small muscles in the hand that lies between the metacarpal bones and are attached to the ring, index, and little fingers.
Attachment of the Palmar Interosseous Muscles
Origin: Palmar 1 – 3: Palmar surfaces of 2nd, 4th, and 5th metacarpals
Insertion: Palmar 1 – 3: Extensor expansions of digits and bases of proximal phalanges of digits 2, 4 and 5
Nerve Supply of the Palmar Interosseous Muscles
Innervated by the deep branch of the ulnar nerve.
Blood supply of the Palmar Interosseous Muscles
Supplied by the palmar metacarpal artery of the deep palmar arch.
Function of the Palmar Interosseous Muscles
The palmar interosseous muscles adduct the fingers towards the middle finger. In addition, they flex the finger at the metacarpo-phalangeal joint and extend the finger at the interphalangeal joint and thus assist the lumbricals.
