Metacarpal Bones Anatomy

The metacarpal bones, form the intermediate part of the hand located within the phalanges of the fingers and the carpal bones of the wrist. The metacarpal bones are similar to the metatarsal bones in the foot.

Metacarpal I – Thumb.
Metacarpal II – Index finger.

Metacarpal III – Middle finger.
Metacarpal IV – Ring finger.

Metacarpal V – Little finger.

Each metacarpal bones have a base, shaft, and head, including the concave lateral and medial borders of the shaft providing attachment of the interossei muscles of the hand.
